about
Spike Jones’ niece Cindy Malone launches our collection with “You Were Near Me,” a track heard by only a handful of people since its 1967 recording. Exhibiting all the hallmarks of a classic Boettcher production—hypnotic, backwards instrumentation, ethereal Ballroom backing vocals, and innovative percussive sound effects—this recording remained in the can until now. Exactly why this stunning effort, assisted by Gary Paxton’s masterful studio crew, never saw release now joins the many other mysteries surrounding the Curt catalog. (Another 1967 take of the Bodie Chandler and Edward McKendry-penned song by Marsha Maye did surface on both RCA and Debutone Records.)
In addition to her acting career, which included appearances on Batman, Love American Style, Bewitched, and the 20th Century Fox motion picture Wild on the Beach, Malone cut numerous sides for RCA and Capitol in the ’60s, some of which are coveted by girl group collectors. On a Capitol Records promotional interview disc, Cindy explained the origin of her singing career: “When I was around 13 years old, I was in an auto accident and broke my leg. I was laid up in bed with nothing to do, so I used to listen to the radio and records all the time. And I used to listen to Kay Starr, who’s my favorite. I used to try and mimic her all the time. So, my parents decided they wanted me to take singing lessons. So, I took singing lessons for awhile, then I was introduced to my manager, Arnie Mills, who took me to a recording company in Hollywood. One thing led to another, and here I am.” Her released output appears to have come to an end by 1967, around the time of Boettcher’s recording.
Cindy Malone “You Were Near Me,” is available now from High Moon Records on their exclusive release Curt Boettcher & Friends Looking For The Sun—the first collection of rare singles and lost tracks that showcases the innovative production of Curt Boettcher.

Truly one of the very best Morricone albums I know of. Why? Because it's important to recognize Morricone as one of the greatest composers of this age and free him from the 'Spaghetti Western' image. Morricone was so much more, and this great collection is an important testament to this. Simply magnificient! Nicolas
